    1. More Than a Boring English Teacher

Mr. Craig Mustard is much more than a boring English teacher who cares about nothing but books and reading, on the weekends he is a sports radio host and enjoys playing sports and spending time with his family.

On the weekdays Mr. Mustard teaches English at Wellesley High School. During the summer he spends most of his time reading books, his all time favorite is The Great Gatsby. On the weekends Mr. Mustard hosts a sports radio show on WEEI with Larry Johnson and they mostly talk about the Red Sox and the Bruins.

Mr. Mustard loves spending lots of time with his wife and two sons in Millis, MA. He very much enjoys sharing his love of sports with his children although he believes that they will be better off having someone besides him as a coach. “My sons love sports, if you name a piece of sports equipment, they probably have it.”

Mr. Mustard originally grew up in Connecticut and is a big fan of the New York Yankees however his interest in baseball is dwindling due to the lack of success the Yankees have had this season. “I am not a big fan of baseball this year, I do not like how the Red Sox have gotten back to their winning ways and the recent four game Yankees- Red Sox series did not go well for the Yankees.”

“Although he has other jobs which showcase his different interests, Mr. Mustard is still an English teacher at heart. During the summer he spends lots of time on his back porch reading his favorite book, The Great Gatsby, and enjoying delicious blueberry muffins.”

  2. Mr. Mustard’s Many Muses
    By Natasha Ladhani
You may know him from your freshman English class, but Craig Mustard has more to him than meets the eye.
Mr. Mustard has been teaching English at Wellesley High School for seventeen years, but in addition to literature, he also loves sports, music and his wife and two kids.
“I grew up in very neutral Yankee versus Red Sox territory, but I chose the side of the Yankees. The only reason I like talking about the Red Sox is when I speak of their demise”, said Mustard.
Not only is Mr. Mustard a fan of sports, but he is also a music enthusiast. Mustard said, “While in college during the 70’s I was a disk jockey and during that time I really developed my love for music, especially this classic rock style”. This music can still be enjoyed in the 21st century thanks to the 100.7 XLE classic rock radio station.
Later on in his life, Mustard became quite the family man. “I have two sons, 8 and 13, and have been married for fifteen years”, he said. Mustard also adds that his secret to marriage is that he “blames most of [his] problems on [his] wife”.
Although Mr. Mustard has many hobbies and interests, his really passion resides in the English department. Mustard says that, “as an English teacher, nothing makes me happier than reading a book on the back porch in the Summer”.

What would you imagine a typical English teacher to do in his free time? Grade papers? Read books?
Craig Mustard is an English teacher. He is currently teaching at Wellesley High School with 17 previous years of experience as well as a radio cohost on WEEI.
“I am fond of literature especially The Great Gatsby,” said Mustard. As an English teacher, Mustard enjoys reading books specifically classics.
Though found reading books in his past time, Mustard has a strong connection to sports. He cohosts a show for the WEEI, a sports radio station, on Saturday. “I work on a 9:00 am show for WEEI on Saturday.” said Mustard.
Mustard is a busy teacher and radio host, but balances his work with his family. He has two children currently in 3rd and 8th grade. His children are well introduced to sports. “I pretty much have every sports equipment for my children,“ said Mustard.
“I have a One Direction CD,” said Mustard, “not because I listen to the boy band but my son used to be a fan of their music.” While Mustard drives his children to school or he drives to work, he listens to a variety to music. He commonly listens to music in the 70’s, but when he is in the car with his children, he has to cope with their variety of music like One Direction.
“Though I love living in Boston and all, I do not enjoy the Red Sox success. I am a Yankees Fan,” said Mustard. “On the contrary, my children are huge Red Sox fans. Overall, my life is so awesome, but I have to deal with the different tastes in the family!”

  4. For Mustard, the Fabric of Life is Diverse

    By: Keenan Ashbrook

“I’ll let you in on a secret,” says Craig Mustard. “I got here a few minutes late.”

The seventeen year veteran of the WHS English department was busy dropping off his son at school in Millis, where he resides with his wife, an adjunct professor at Boston College, and two sons. Mr. Mustard is indeed a busy man – apart from the full time jobs of teaching and parenting, he also co-hosts a Saturday sports talk show on WEEI, a local sports radio station.

For Mustard, sports are as much a part of life as literature. Growing up in Connecticut, he played tennis for his high school team, and became a fan of the New York Yankees. “In Connecticut, Red Sox fans and Yankees fans are split about 50-50,”he says. “It’s neutral ground.” Being a sports talk host, he is also quite knowledgeable about other most other sports as well.

His sports radio show, “Mustard and Johnson,” airs from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays on 97.3 FM WEEI. “We primarily discuss the Red Sox and Patriots, and sometimes the Celtics.”

Mustard is also naturally a fan of classic literature. His favorite novel is The Great Gatsby. Being a film buff as well, he remarks “They’ve tried to turn it into a movie four times, and they were all awful.” An ex-college DJ, Mustard is also a fan of 70’s music, including the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel.

At home with his family, Mustard gets some time away from his busy schedule to spend with his wife and sons, who are in the 3rd and 8th grades. His sons are as big sports fans as he is, but “unfortunately,” they are Red Sox fans. “We have every kind of sporting equipment you can think of – soccer balls, skate boards, tennis rackets...you name it, we’ve got it.”

His eight-year-old son was apparently once a fan of the British boy band “One Direction,” but according to Mustard, “thankfully, that phase has passed.”

  5. Day in the life of Mustard: Nathan Chiu

When you first encounter Mr. Mustard, he just appears like a typical English teacher, energetic and talkative. But wait, Mr. Mustard is more than your ordinary run of the mill English teacher. You’ll be surprised to learn that working as a sports broadcaster, playing tennis, and being a father are just few of his diverse interests and professions.

On the second day of class, Mr. Mustard allowed us to examine his car for clues about his personal life. After thoroughly searching Mustard’s Lexus, the class asked questions formulated from the evidence in the car. From these answers, we gained an intimate perspective on the busy life of Craig Mustard.

As if being an English teacher isn’t hectic enough, Mr. Mustard also co-hosts his own radio show WEEI 93.7 on the Mustard and Johnson show. Mustard and his co-host discuss sports, particularly baseball. Surprisingly, even though Mustard resides near Boston in Millis, he is an avid Yankees fan.

“I grew up in Connecticut where Yankees and Red Sox fans were split evenly. I just happened to become a Yankees fan.” Mustard said.

In addition to broadcasting, Mustard is also involved in several other sports such as tennis and golf. Although he has not been playing these sports recently, he still continues to follow professional tennis, especially the top 4 players of men’s tennis. As an avid tennis fan, Mr. Mustard’s favorite tennis star to watch is Nadal.

Now, Mr. Mustard’s interests are not confined to the list mentioned before. He enjoys cooking simple meals such as blueberry muffins, pasta, and other stove top cooking in his home in Millis.

“I enjoy cooking simple meals in my house. I love making blueberry muffins with my own blueberries.” Mustard said.

Furthermore, Mustard is environmentally conscious even though his wife isn’t. He takes pride in using re-usable water bottles, although much to his chagrin, his wife enjoys bringing home crates of plastic water bottles for their two sons.

Finally, Mustard has several interesting and amusing words of advice.

“One should blame everything on their spouse when he or she is not present.” Mr. Mustard said.

  6. What Might Leave you Flustered About Mr. Mustard

    By Celia Golod

Mr. Mustard might look and seem like an average English high school teacher yet most fail to notice he is actually much more then that.

Mr. Mustard has many interests including sports, literature and 70's music but he will always put his job and family first.

Mustards has a segment on WEEI sports radio from 9am-1pm every saturday morning. He takes has a passion or sports so this is is a good way to put his knowledge to use.

Mr. Mustard is also interested in classic books and movies. One of his favorites is the Great Gatsby. Mustard says "I will always choose to sit back on my porch reading one of my favorite classics.

Mustard has two sons both of which share his interest in sports. Unlike their father, a Yankees fan the boys are Red sox, which you can tell might spark conflict in their household.

One of Mustards other interest is 70’s music. He grew up with classic rock and it is still what he listens to on his rides to work and even just when schlepping around his kids.He believes “the music from that decade is something people from all generations should listen to.” He "encourages students to tune into 100.7 classic rock to listen to tunes that he grew up listening to."

“Mr. Mustard seems like a great teacher with tons of positive energy,” says new student Olivia Geiger. “His interests in sports, music and books really seem to help him in his classes. It very clear to see how much he loves his job and the bond he shares with his students. I look forward to spending the rest of the year with him.”

  7. Craig Mustard- Car Investigation
    By: Olivia Gieger

It is quite a rare opportunity to be encouraged to ransack a car and go through all the items in it but, on Friday, September 6, Craig Mustard gave the students of Media Matters the opportunity to do just that.

Through the car investigation it was found that Craig Mustard, English teacher at Wellesley High School, lives in Millis, MA with his two sons and his wife, an ADJANT Social work professor at BC. Mustard, who was a fan of radio and sports in high school (and still is), co-hosts with Larry Johnson a sports radio show on Saturdays for WEEI where they discuss “mostly Sox and Patriots”.

Mustard is also very active in his children’s lives. He admits to dropping them both off at school every morning to explain why he usually arrives at work at eight. His car is full of his kids’ sporting equipment as well as his own, Mustard claims “ There is not a single sporting equipment we do not have”

He is a fan of golf however has spent more time reading than playing. Mustard, a fan of literature favors classics such as the Great Gatsby. He says it’s more time on the porch less time on the course”.

Mustard’s kids, ages 8 and 14, are also very active and seem to have time for their soccer and baseball practices as well as making time to read children’s books like the Frog and Toad, which was found in the backseat of his car. Mustard and his children seem to have a close relationship but not without a little family rivalry, Mustard, a native from Connecticut, is a Yankees fan as for his children he adds “Unfortunately, they are Red Sox fans”.

  8. All about Mr. Mustard

    By, Julia Clapham

To his English students, he is known as Mr. Mustard. But he is also a father, husband, and radio host. He is much more than just an English teacher.

Mr. Mustard has been working a Wellesley High School for 17 years. He lives in Millis with his two sons and wife, on the weekends he works on WEEI radio, a sports station.

Mr. Mustard’s interest in sports must have been past down to his children. His sons play baseball, soccer and he likes tennis and golf. “ Any sports equipment you name, we have it.” Mr. Mustard likes baseball too, but he is rooting for the Yankees-unlike most of Massachusetts.

Mr. Mustard, being an English teacher, enjoys classics. “I love reading. My favorite book is The Great Gatsby. I spent all summer on the back porch reading.” Said Mustard

Mr. Mustard is also a fan of music. “Because I was in high school and college during the 70’s, I love 70’s music.” Said Mustard, “I always listen to it on 100.7 Classic Rock.”

“I love radio, it doesn’t matter if it is Wait Wait Don’t tell me, 100.7 or my station, WEEI.”

  9. What it’s like to be Mustard Colin Emerson

As you walk into room 226 at Wellesley High School and think to yourself as you listen the voice speaking to you, you think: “That friendly bark sounds familiar from outside this english classroom, where have I heard it before. Oh, yeah! It’s the guy I heard last Saturday at 10:30 A.M. ranting and raving about the Red Sox and Pats, how unfortunate their success is for all fans who share his opinions. He’s a teacher here too?”

The person you are thinking of is Craig Mustard, and he was born in 1956 in Connecticut. He grew up a Giants fan (NFL) and a Yankees fan, like other nutmeggers at that time, but usually discusses Boston teams on his show “Mustard and Johnson” Saturdays from 9-1. Mustard is usually quite busy no matter what day it is, between his radio show and teaching, he also sometimes has to run errands or drop his children off at school.

However, he enjoys reading classical literature in his spare time. His favorite book is the Great Gatsby and he admitted he can lose track of time while reading a good book. “Over the summer, I had perhaps too many hours spent on the back porch,” said Mustard about his hobby of reading.

Mustard also prefers reusable water bottles as opposed to plastic bottle use. “I definitely support the new push for kids at the high school to use the Camelbak kind of bottles,” Mustard said. “I don’t see the point of spending extra money for more plastic bottles instead of doing the environmentally healthy thing and getting one reusable bottle.”

One more thing about Mustard is he has a weakness for blueberry muffins and sometimes cooks his own. “I only have the most basic culinary skills with pre made recipes,” said Mustard. “But it does the trick, and I can make sure there’s a balance of fruit and cake.”
