  1. Spending Time with Family

    Julia Clapham

Over Thanksgiving break Keenan Ashbrook drove to New York City to visit his mom’s side of the family for the holiday.

Keenan left Wellesley on Wednesday morning to share Thanksgiving, and his birthday, with his cousins, aunts, and uncle. Thanksgiving dinner was his favorite part, which included turkey, truffle mashed potatoes, and pumpkin crab meat soup. “ The waiter gave it to me instead of an alcoholic beverage,” Keenan said.

The break continued with going to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, watching Catching Fire with his younger cousins, and having lunch with Keenan’s cousin’s fiance and family at Rockefeller Center, then sleeping at his cousins’ house.

New York City was also a great place to eat delicious food. “We had another nice meal,” he said about dinner on Friday.

When Keenan got home on Saturday morning, he was sad to leave his four cousins, two aunts, uncle, and cousin’s fiance. His cousins are somewhat close in age, varying from 11 years old to mid-twenties.

  2. Turkey with a side of birthday cake
    By Celia Golod

During Thanksgiving break Colin Emerson packed his bags and headed off to Tampa, Florida to spend a relaxing vacation celebrating turkey day and his birthday with his mothers side of the family.
On thanksgiving Colin and his family enjoyed delicious turkey, quiche, stuffing, corn, cranberries and mac n’ cheese. Colin said “the mac n’ cheese is extremely good because of this pepper my uncles fiance puts in it to make it spicy.” Overall he concludes the meal itself was outstanding.
Three days after thanksgiving, November 30th, Colin turned 16 years old. He spent the day before a busch garden and for his birthday dinner he dined at the Melting pot. He still is yet to receive his gifts.
While on his trip Colin visited the big cat rescue. “The big cat rescue is really cool,” Colin said “It’s like a animal shelter but nicer because it lets the animals stay for life. They also are exotic cats so we got to see Cougars, Leopards, Tigers, Lions and many other interesting animals.”
Colin sees his moms side of the family “often enough” and is very close to them. Thanksgiving, like every other holiday is one he tends to spend with them despite the location they may be in.

  3. Low Expectations Result in Plentiful Merrymaking
    By Natasha Ladhani

Six days of break resulted in six days of fun and folly. With no pre-determined plans for Thanksgiving Break, Olivia Geiger spent her weekend with family, friends and miscellaneous means for entertainment.
Starting on Thursday, the turkey day itself, the Geiger family played games such as harry potter clue and facecards as the Thanksgiving Feast was being prepared and even afterwards. With the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade as a background, joy was pertinent throughout the house.
Commonly known as “Black Friday” Olivia joined in the norm to shop the day after Thanksgiving. She took the opportunity to venture into Boston and strolled along Newbury Street. Geiger concluded the day by watching the new Disney film “Frozen”, which she deemed “surprisingly good”.
In her opinion, Frozen was “definitely like a Broadway movie with a lot of singing and dancing”; however she also shared her content that it was not a “typical Disney prince and princess movie. Two sisters saved themselves instead of a prince having to save the day”.
Saturday and Sunday were spent just as any other lazy weekend with football games, renting movies at home and going out for dinner.
Geiger wound up the break by volunteering at Cradles to Crayons with her mother and sister in Boston where they sorted baby clothes. She felt it was right to end her Thanksgiving weekend by giving back to her community.
All in all, Olivia Geiger did not expect much out of her Thanksgiving break, but she ended up enjoying herself. She said herself it was “kind of boring but [she] had a lot of fun”.

  4. Ethan Enjoys Thanksgiving Break

Thanksgiving break is one of the rare times where the youth of America do not have to live through the harsh realities of the American public school system. Kids get to spend lots of time with friends and family, enjoy delicious food and unwind from the difficult previous three months of school.

Ethan Chiu, a freshmen at Wellesley High School, stayed home for Thanksgiving break, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have lots of fun with his family and friends. He ate lots of delicious food with his family on Thanksgiving day and enjoyed running and playing basketball with his friends.

Unfortunately Thanksgiving break wasn’t always fun for Chiu, as on Wednesday afternoon he was forced to get permanent retainers put in his mouth. “On wednesday I went to the Orthodontist and they put these permanent retainers in my mouth. They were really hard to get used to and they make it much more difficult to talk.”

On the Friday and Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday, Chiu spent lots of time hanging out with his friends. “On friday my friends and I went running at the track to keep us in shape, on Saturday we played basketball for four hours at Longfellow Sports Club and then went to my friends house to watch a Teen Titan marathon.”

The monday after Thanksgiving was a big day for Chiu, as tryouts began for the Wellesley High School basketball team. “Tryouts were really tough because we had to run a lot and I came home feeling really tired and felt really sore after.”

“Although the Thanksgiving break wasn’t always fun and games, it was nice to get a break from school and to spend some quality time with my family and friends” said Chiu.

  5. Thankful Thanksgiving:

Caterina fondly recalls her enjoyment last Friday when she watched the new movie, “Catching Fire” with her family. Caterina had already read the novel prior to seeing the movie and she was excited to see the movie. However, Caterina’s mother was even more excited. To Caterina’s dismay, during the movie, her mother would shout in surprise in response to the plot of the movie. Even with these disturbances, Caterina still managed to enjoy the movie as with the entirety of her Thanksgiving break.

On Thanksgiving day, Caterina stayed home since she wanted to rest after a term of stress and hard work. Her older sister visited from Mount Holyoke College. Together, Caterina enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with her immediate family.

On Saturday, Caterina went to Elizabeth Seton Residence to volunteer. Here at this nursing home, Caterina helped elderly patients with bingo, rosaries, and do drop in. During do drop in, elderly residents would discuss life over alcoholic beverages, which Caterina found unusual.

The following day, Caterina stayed home once again to relax. She read the book Ender’s Game. She thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finally, on Monday, Caterina completed the remainder of her homework.

“I’m glad to have this opportunity to sleep and eat, especially after the stressful term,” Caterina said.

  6. Joyful Break
    By: Ethan Chiu

Peter Santo had a great thanksgiving break spending time with his family and friends after recovering from a back surgery.

Thanksgiving was a great day for Peter. He had turkey, mashed potatoes, and apple pie. All this food was shared with his family, cousins, and grandparents.

Peter turned 16 the following day. He went to the Boston College hockey game against Holy Cross. After the Eagles lost, Peter ate dinner with his father at his father’s restaurant The Local which had just opened less than week beforehand.

The break was fun and enjoyable for Peter even though he didn’t get any deals on Black Friday or Cyber Monday . The day before he got back to school, he got what he wanted. “I finally got the Playstation 4 on Monday from Gamestop,” said Peter. “It is amazing”

Also, that day he got his driver’s license at the DMV.

Two days before, Peter had a major letdown. He missed the Iron Bowl but got to go to see another sport game. “Even though I missed the dramatic Iron Bowl finish, I got to go to my sister’s basketball game.”

The next day he got to watch the Patriots game against the Texans on tv. Later that day, he enjoyed dinner in Boston.

  7. The Best Parties are During Thanksgiving

    By: Caterina Baffa

Nathan Chiu, a sophomore at Wellesley High School, sat playing guitar during a Music Team practice at his church. The date is Saturday, November 30, and all the members of the group are chatting as they enjoy their music together.

This scene is a typical one for Chiu, especially over the recent Thanksgiving vacation. His days were connected by a string of friendly get-togethers and activities.

His Turkey Day was a day spent with his family, eating the usual Thanksgiving meal of turkey before going to watch the new movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

“I screamed at some scary parts,” Chiu said, while also mentioning the elderly lady who seemed to give him “contemptuous looks” for disturbing her with his screams.

The next day, he spent his time shopping for headphones online in the Black Friday Spirit. That evening, he attended a large potluck dinner at a family friend’s house, where he and others played board games.

Saturday was busy for Chiu, studying for Academic decathlon and a Music Team practice, followed by essays for homework on Sunday.

Chiu gets an average of four hours of sleep per night, but on the final day of his school break, he slept until well in the afternoon, leaving him unprepared for his cello lesson. All of his activities were wrapped up that night, when he went to a Jenga party, and played all kinds of board games.
“We actually played the game Clue while watching the Clue movie,” he said.

  8. Ladhali takes Thanksgiving Trip to Philadelphia
    By: Olivia Gieger

Natasha Ladhali just returned from a trip full of old friends and late nights in Philadelphia.

Ladhali left Wednesday evening for an 8 hour drive to Philadelphia where she and her family were reunited with family friends for the Thanksgiving holiday. Ladhali spent time at many of her friends’ houses playing games, talking and eating until very early in the morning,

She spent Thursday eating and catching up with over 40 people, who she had not seen in over 3 years. The Thanksgiving festivities followed all the way into Black Friday with 1:00 A.M. games of trivial pursuit that ended at 5:30 A.M..

When the game was over they continued on to Target in search for the discounted new iPad, but “Unfortunately they were all sold out ” remarked Ladhali, “and so we went back home”.

On Friday, Ladhali and her friends “really wanted to see Catching Fire”. With a late wake up at noon, Ladhali explains they “had to rush to the theatre for the one o’clock show time, but luckily [they] just made it ”.

Saturday the Ladhali family returned to their old hometown and took a break from all the excitement and returned just in time for Sunday for football.

“They never show Eagles games on Boston TV ,” said Ladhali, “So we were really happy to be able to see a game”. As a result of this, Ladhali and her family ordered 150 wings that all 12 people watching the game finished. “It was a really nice to see a game again” said Ladhali, and “to make it even better, the Eagles beat the cardinals.”

  9. While many students might have been sleeping in on Friday, Julia Clapham was awake, having risen at 5:30 AM to take advantage of Black Friday deals.

For Clapham, this Thanksgiving meant enjoying the holiday at home with her family. Instead of travelling like many other families, the Claphams enjoyed a family dinner at home on Thursday. Despite not getting out of town, she still enjoyed the break.

For their Thanksgiving meal, the Claphams enjoyed turkey, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, green beans, and mashed potatoes, along with an assortment of pies. Those present at the 5 o’clock meal included Clapham’s parents, her three sisters, and her eldest sister’s boyfriend.

The next morning, Clapham rose early to head to the Natick Mall. There, she was on the lookout for Black Friday bargains. “I bought a seventy dollar scarf for eight dollars,” she said with a laugh. Clapham also bought some socks that were on sale. Once home, she made up for the sleep she didn’t get in the morning with a four hour nap.

Clapham had a mostly quiet weekend, going to a friend’s house on Saturday. On Sunday, she and her sisters went to see the second Hunger Games movie, “Catching Fire.” “It was good,” said Clapham. “It was better than the first one.” Her sisters, ages 14, 16, and 27, enjoyed it as well.

On Monday, Clapham went with her oldest sister, a resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to do more shopping at the Natick Mall. Clapham’s sister spent “ten hours” looking for shoes, but apparently didn’t find any she liked. Clapham herself bought a skirt.

Overall, Clapham’s Thanksgiving break was a quiet one, despite all the shopping. She enjoyed the vacation as a nice break from school, and especially the sweet potatoes and marshmallows. According to Clapham, “that was definitely my favorite part.”

  10. Title Forthcoming
    Colin Emerson

Over the course of Thanksgiving break, Celia Golod was constantly on the move, traveling to 3 different states over the course of 5 days so she could celebrate Thanksgiving with several branches of her family as well as family friends.

This Thanksgiving trip above all was an important trip for Celia and her family, because it is the last trip her family has before her parents split up. “It held lots of sentimental value for us,” she said.

Aside from that, Celia saw several other members of her family over the course of their trip. “In Philly, I saw my Uncle and my cousins… I saw my other cousins in New York state, which was fun because they’re my age, and I saw my mom’s best friend from college in New York City,” she said.

Unfortunately, her uncle fell ill with cancer, and it had been a while since she saw him. “It was good to see him because with his cancer it was my first time seeing him in a while,” she said. “He has been in and out of hospitals for a lot of the time.

Over the course the trip, Celia enjoyed several unusual foods. “We had a cake shaped like a turkey, in New York City we had Korean Barbecue, banana pudding from Magnolias, and the Pez museum is not popular at all so we got a lot of Pez from there as well.”
